Lauderdale is a wonderful city - a small town in the heart of the metro. We are just a few minutes from both downtowns, but we enjoy the warmth of a small town, a safe community and wonderful schools. In our small city we offer as many amenities as possible. A dog park, a nature area, a farmer's market, and the Halloween Party all contribute to our sense of community. We provide quality services to residents at a lower cost per capita than almost any nearby municipality. We offer many options for affordable housing. My vision is to help this great city thrive and develop while preserving its essential character. I would love to see a vital commercial district at Larpenteur and Eustis, featuring a coffee shop, an expansion of our brand-new farmer's market, and community gardens.
As a city, we are frugal and careful, but we could not provide even basic services to our residents through taxes alone. We are a small, fully developed community, with modest homes and a small business district. In order to be sustainable, we need other forms of revenue. We are excited this year to develop conduit bonding, and we have worked very hard with the legislature to ensure the stabilization of Local Government Aid. As a result we are fiscally sound without placing an undue tax burden on our residents.
I am excited to work with the East Metro Transit Alliance to collaborate on bringing more mass transit to the East Metro. Working together across city and county lines strengthens our ability to advocate for projects that will fund future growth and support redevelopment. Together, we can more effectively compete for transit dollars and improve the quality of life of our citizens.
I have been delighted to welcome new business to Lauderdale, and am grateful for our local businesses who are committed to making Lauderdale a better place to live. I believe we have the opportunity to have a thriving little downtown on our much trafficked thoroughfare. We have limited funds as a city, but we have worked hard to plant the seeds for intentional development that will bring the city the kind of services they want and need. I would love to see a little coffee shop or a little grocery on Larpenteur that is accessible by safe walking pathways.
I am passionate about making Lauderdale an attractive community for families and individuals with changing needs. I love working with homeowners and renters who are committed to staying in Lauderdale and need help figuring out how to adapt small, aging homes for contemporary lifestyles.
